Lightning is one of the hottest natural phenomena on Earth and can reach temperatures up to 30,000 Kelvin—about five times hotter than the surface of the Sun, which is around 5,500 Kelvin. Although lightning only lasts for a brief moment, this intense heat is powerful enough to fuse sand into glass, known as fulgurite, at the strike location.
