Despite its name, an airplane’s “black box” is actually bright orange! This color helps investigators locate the box more easily in the event of a crash. The bright orange hue is highly visible in a variety of environments, such as underwater or among debris.
Airplanes have two types of black boxes: the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), both of which are painted in the same bright color to enhance their visibility for recovery teams.
